Science

Intent

At BHCPS, our science curriculum is designed to cultivate independent thought, curiosity, and confidence in children. Our goal is to build upon pupils' prior learning and skills to encourage them to ask questions, test ideas, and engage in hands-on experiments. Through our curriculum, the children will learn to plan and observe experiments, use scientific equipment, present and evaluate results, and use technical language accurately. We also believe in the importance of experiencing the natural world first hand, which is why we prioritise outdoor learning opportunities in our science learning. Overall, our aim is to foster a love of science and a desire to continually learn and explore in every child.

Implementation

At BHCPS, we use a range of teaching approaches and resources, including technology and exciting texts. Children are encouraged to learn through exploration and discovery, and to develop their scientific skills through practical work, including conducting experiments, using scientific equipment, and collecting and analysing data.

In addition to classroom-based lessons, we provide opportunities for children to learn about science through outdoor learning, trips, visitors and extracurricular activities such as science clubs and fairs. These activities can help to bring science to life for children and provide them with a greater appreciation of the subject.

Impact

Science at BHCPS helps children develop critical thinking skills, enhances their understanding of the world, encourages curiosity and a love of learning, improves communication skills, and supports career development. Through science, pupils are able to ask questions and make predictions, which are important for problem-solving and decision-making. Additionally, science at BHCPS helps children understand the world and how it works and has a lasting impact on them.
