Maths
Intent
Maths is an essential skill which children will use all their lives. At BHCPS, we aim to deliver a high-quality maths education through daily lessons to support the children to develop these fundamental skills.
We intend that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions
Implementation
Through the use of Power Maths, our pupils work individually and collaboratively with their teachers facilitating their learning. Children self-assess, are constantly challenged and have clear models and images to help their understanding. Most lessons include problem solving to develop children’s conceptual understanding enabling them to apply their skills to different problems. We teach strategies for calculation with a focus on mental methods, jottings and formal written methods.
Impact
Children enjoy being challenged in Maths at BHCPS and have many opportunities to become confident and capable mathematicians. They are confident discussing their learning and enjoy talking about their work. Children build up a range of strategies and approaches towards maths as they progress through school, which will prepare them for further education and future life.

The ten strands of maths as laid out in the national curriculum are:
- Number and Place Value
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication and Division
- Fractions including Decimals (Year 4 – 6) and Percentages (Year 5 & 6).
- Measurement (includes time, money, length, area, mass and capacity)
- Ratio and Proportion (Year 6 only)
- Algebra (only taught explicitly in Year 6)
- Geometry – Properties of Shapes
- Geometry – Position and Direction
- Statistics (Years 2 – 6)
Maths News
During November, 30 pupils from across Years 5 and 6 took part in the Primary Maths Challenge. Congratulations to all who took part - we are very impressed with how well they all did.
